Preventing weight gain is essential if we are to reduce these statistics. The Bogalusa Heart Study found a significant correlation between higher fiber intake in children and reductions in intake of sugar, fat, saturated fat, and calories. Encouraging higher fiber, lower fat foods will help ensure avoidance of obesity and it's complications in our next generation.

Increased physical activity is a necessary component of obesity reduction as well. It is indeed a well known fact that the computer age has changed the way kids work and play. Be sure your child stays physically active. Limit television and video game time. Encourage more active leisure time activities.

Michelle Obama is concerned that one in three children is obese. She talks openly about children obesity facts, she says: "I can see how we got there, it's because we live differently, we have more pressures and hardly have time and energy to do decent meals. There is more computer time and less active play time." A lot of Michelle’s thoughts on family and children obesity facts surfaced during the interview she gave on one of America’s leading morning programs "Today".


Childhood obesity is most pronounced among kids with African-American and Hispanic backgrounds. She explains that they are still working on benchmarks now but the broad goal is "to change the health statistics of an entire generation." She freely quotes her eloquent husband when she says that "we don’t have the option to do nothing." In her own little way, Michelle Obama is trying to make a difference in the lives of children and families in a way dissimilar to her predecessors.

"I have no role model," she explains, when asked about which of the previous First Ladies she is patterning herself after, "because this First Lady job does not come with a job description." She adds: "All I want is to be helpful."


The First Lady has some good ideas: get kids moving, cut out the junk food and get them interested in eating fresh, nourishing food I read that last year she planted a vegetable garden at the White House with the help of some youngsters. She has even talked about "engaging families and communities" in the Let’s Move drive.

This last initiative is key to children obesity facts: More than for any other reason, children are overweight because the adults who care for them are themselves overweight and/or unmotivated to make changes. There is a dual moral and parenting dimension to this issue that has been virtually ignored by politicians and the media.

Behind the obesity epidemic is a much larger problem of unmotivated parents, many of whom are also overweight. This is the real challenge for Michelle Obama. If she and her task force could persuade even a fraction of parents to change their lifestyles and to adopt just three routines with their young children:

  • family dinners
  • proper sleep
  • rationed TV

  • these would make a permanent difference.

    Without reaching and motivating parents, the First Lady’s ambitious and laudable goal of eliminating childhood obesity in one generation will remain no more than wishful thinking.
